Hanging Bridge in Albay Collapses Due to Flooding

Albay Hanging Bridge Falls Apart Due to Flooding

ALBAY – A hanging bridge in Pio Duran collapsed after midnight on Wednesday due to severe flooding.

The 120-meter bridge in Sitio Lagaan, Barangay Banawan, fell around 12:04 AM, according to the Pio Duran Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO). Its concrete base supports on both ends and steel braces failed under the relentless rain and floodwaters brought on by Tropical Storm Kristine.

The entire structure was destroyed and swept away by the strong current of the river. This bridge served as a vital connection for residents, allowing students to access schools and community members to commute for work.

Residents expressed deep sorrow over the bridge’s destruction, especially as they were preparing to celebrate the feast of their patron, Senior Saint Rafael De Arcanghel, on the day of the collapse and the following day. The loss of this essential infrastructure not only affects daily transportation but also dampens the festive spirit of the community during a significant cultural event.

Tropical Storm Kristine has caused severe flooding in Albay, Bicol, leaving many residents stranded and urgently needing help. In Brgy. Triangulo, Naga City, residents were observed calling for rescue on Tuesday night as floodwaters quickly rose. Similar cries for assistance were reported in Iraya Norte, Oas, Albay, where life-threatening flood conditions prevailed.

The storm resulted in significant flooding across the region, with water levels reaching dangerously high levels. Authorities and local communities urged everyone to remain safe and pray for the victims of the storm. Rescue operations began early Wednesday morning in Naga City, as confirmed by Mayor Son Legacion. However, the Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (RDRRMC) Bicol admitted they were overwhelmed and struggling to address the high number of emergency calls due to the severe flooding.

On October 22, Albay was declared in a state of calamity due to the extensive damage caused by the storm.
