Ara Mina and Shamcey Supsup Venture Into Politics
ARA MINA and SHAMCEY SUPSUP – The two are running for councilor in Pasig City, with their husbands also participating as party-list nominees.
They filed their candidacy on October 7, 2024, under the ticket of entrepreneur Sarah Discaya, who will face the incumbent mayor, Vico Sotto. Shamcey is running for councilor in District 1, while Ara is in District 2.
In an interview, Ara Mina expressed her readiness to enter politics after years of being encouraged to run. She emphasized her commitment to advocating for Persons With Disabilities (PWD) and urban poor communities. Ara stated, “Hindi ko hahayaan na mabigo kayo sa pagsuporta sa akin,” aiming to expand her impact through public service. She grew up in Pasig and has a strong desire to help her community.
Shamcey, the former Miss Universe 2011 third runner-up, also aims to serve her hometown. She highlighted her connection to Pasig, where she has lived since 2013, and her desire to empower women. Shamcey noted, “We want to provide women equal opportunities in everything—leadership, entrepreneurial.” She emphasized the importance of supporting women’s health and mental well-being, as well as enhancing the city’s infrastructure.
Both candidates faced skepticism regarding celebrities entering politics. Ara Mina urged people not to generalize, stating that celebrities can also contribute positively to society. Shamcey aimed to change perceptions about beauty queens, emphasizing their intelligence and capability beyond their public personas. She hopes voters will see her credentials and values rather than just her fame.
In addition to their advocacy work, Shamcey Supsup’s husband, Lloyd Lee, is running for the ARTE party-list. With a shared commitment to community service and empowerment, both couples are poised to make a significant impact in Pasig City’s upcoming elections.
