Biscuit from 1940 Discovered in Freezer
FORGOTTEN BISCUIT – Andy Wiseman’s family made a surprising discovery in the freezer of his late grandmother, who passed away on September 2, 2024, at the age of 90 in Staunton, Virginia. While cleaning her house, Andy’s mother, Linda, found an 84-year-old biscuit with a handwritten note stating it was made by Mrs. Dara L. Chambers in August 1940 at the Blankenship home.
Andy shared the unusual find on Reddit, captioning it, “Found an 84-year-old biscuit in my Grandmother’s freezer,” which caught the attention of many users online. He expressed his curiosity about the biscuit’s origin and wondered why his grandmother kept it for so long without eating it.
To uncover the biscuit’s history, Andy’s family spoke with Sally, his grandmother’s sister. They learned that Mrs. Dara L. Chambers was the first wife of Harold, his grandmother’s brother. A newspaper clipping from that time revealed that Dara died in 1940, the same year she made the cookie. Andy and his family believe that the biscuit might be from Dara’s last batch before her passing.
Despite his grandmother’s habit of throwing away things she didn’t consider valuable, Andy thinks the biscuit was originally kept by Harold for sentimental reasons. After Harold’s death, his grandmother likely found the biscuit and placed it in the freezer, unable to throw it away because of its emotional significance.
Andy described the cookie as hard as a rock with a faint freezer smell. Though his mother suspects it might be a soda biscuit, they are uncertain about the exact recipe used to bake it. The family has decided to keep the biscuit in their freezer as a tribute to their grandmother and as a piece of family history.
The discovery of the cookie has brought some comfort to the family during their grieving process, allowing them to celebrate their grandmother’s memory. Andy recalled how his grandmother always treated them to pizza every month and how much they missed her. Reflecting on the memories the biscuit holds, Andy said, “We all really loved her, and we miss her a lot,” highlighting how the find has kept her spirit alive in their hearts.
