Son Sues Mom for Throwing Away His Attack on Titan Manga Collection

Mom Faces Legal Trouble for Throwing Away Her Son’s Attack on Titan Manga Collection

TAIWAN – A mother in Chiayi City named Chien is facing legal consequences after throwing away her son’s 34-volume manga comic collection of Attack on Titan.

The incident arose from their living situation, where Chien, 64, became frustrated with the space taken up by her son’s extensive collection. In February 2024, she decided to dispose of the comics after noticing they were becoming moldy, believing this would create more space in their home.

Unbeknownst to her, her son, who is 20 years old, returned home to find his beloved comic collection missing and was understandably furious. His anger escalated beyond a simple argument; he reported the incident to the police and filed a lawsuit against his mother. He claimed that she destroyed his personal property without consent, emphasizing the significance of the Attack on Titan series, which is not only popular but also regarded as a collector’s item due to the lack of reprints of the 34 volumes.

Chien defended her actions in court, arguing that the comics were moldy and had become a significant inconvenience in their home. She expressed a desire to reconcile with her son but met with resistance. Despite her apologies and offers for an out-of-court settlement, her son remained unwilling to resolve the issue amicably.

According to PEP.ph, the legal proceedings culminated in September 2024, six months after the incident. The court ruled that, regardless of their familial relationship, Chien should have respected her son’s rights to his property. Although her actions were considered mild and non-violent, she was still ordered to pay NT$5,000 (approximately PHP8,778.73) in damages. This amount may be reduced to community service if she appeals the decision.

As of now, the relationship between Chien and her son remains strained, with no reconciliation in sight.
