PBBM Comments on Selfies of Alice Guo with Government Officials
ALICE GUO SELFIES – President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. commented on the social media posts showing the dismissed mayor of Bamban, Tarlac, taking selfies with government officials, including Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Benhur Abalos and Philippine National Police (PNP) Chief Rommel Marbil. The selfies, which surfaced after Guo was handed over by Indonesia to Philippine authorities, sparked public interest and discussion.
In an interview on September 6, Marcos addressed the viral selfies by noting that taking and sharing photos, including selfies, is part of the “new culture.” He emphasized that the Philippines is known as the “selfie capital of the world,” suggesting that such behavior is not unusual.
Marcos remarked that people often take selfies and post them online, and it is common to see people smiling in these photos. He downplayed any significant implications of the selfies, suggesting that they are simply a part of modern social interactions.
“I think that is part of the new culture now na nagpapakuha lagi ng kahit ano, tapos ipo-post nila,” Marcos said. “Ang tawag natin sa Pilipinas, we are the selfie capital of the world, ‘di ba? Edi nag-selfie. Hindi mo na mapigilan ang mga tao na ngumiti. They just had a selfie. I don’t think there’s much more to it than that,” he added.
The photos of Guo with Abalos and Marbil, which were taken during the handover process, showed her appearing cheerful alongside the officials. Abalos explained the positive demeanor in the photos, while Guo also clarified her apparent happiness in the images.
Guo’s arrival in the Philippines on Friday morning followed her transfer from Indonesia, where she had been arrested on August 4. She was wanted in the Philippines for contempt and several other charges before fleeing to Malaysia, Singapore, and finally Indonesia.
