Jude Bacalso Reveals He’s Been Misgendered Not Once, But Three Times
JUDE BACALSO – The food and travel journalist and producer has addressed the issue of misgendering, specifically his “sir” incident, once again.
Bacalso drew attention for allegedly disciplining a waiter named R-Jay Marcilla. Bacalso reportedly made the waiter stand for two hours after being addressed as “sir.” Although Bacalso has apologized, some online users dispute his version, suggesting that the waiter voluntarily stood for the duration rather than being forced.
The situation has unexpectedly benefited the waiter, who is now receiving job offers both locally and internationally. One offer includes a supervisor role at a salon or in travel and tours from a businessman, and another opportunity abroad is also on the table. However, the waiter has not yet addressed these offers or the ongoing controversy.
Several celebrities, including Ogie Diaz, MJ Lastimosa, RR Enriquez, Kaladkaren, and social media personality Tito Mars, have criticized Bacalso for his actions toward the waiter.
In response, the waiter has filed formal charges against Jude Bacalso, including Unjust Vexation, Grave Scandal, Grave Coercion, Grave Threats, and Slight Illegal Detention. According to Marcilla’s legal team from Cabrido and Law Firm, he has been deeply affected by the incident, struggling with leaving his home and returning to work due to trauma. Atty. Ron Ivan Gingoyon reported that the incident has significantly impacted Marcilla’s mental health.
Meanwhile, Jude Bacalso addressed the issue again during the “MAMSER: Improving Media Reporting on Gender” forum at the Marcelo B. Fernan Cebu Press Center in Cebu City on Thursday, September 19, amid the celebration of Cebu Press Freedom Week 2024.
“I had a valid complaint… I was misgendered not once, but three times. When it happened, my standard response is always humor… Inclusivity is very important, especially when you’re in a public-facing industry,” Bacalso said.
