While in Detention, Alice Guo Turns to Reading the Bible and ‘The Purpose Driven Life’
ALICE GUO – The former mayor of Bamban, Tarlac is using her time in detention to reflect and grow spiritually.
Since she was taken into custody at the Philippine National Police (PNP) center on Friday, Guo has been spending her time reading religious and motivational books, including the Bible and The Purpose Driven Life. PNP spokesperson Col. Jean Fajardo shared that Guo asked for these faith-based books to help her pass the time and find support during this difficult period.
In a recent interview outside the detention center, Fajardo explained that Guo’s choice of reading material shows her effort to find peace and meaning while dealing with her current situation. Her selection of these books indicates her desire for spiritual comfort and personal growth while facing the challenges of detention.
“[Former] Mayor Alice Guo requested for books, that keeps her occupied,” Fajardo said during a sideline interview on Monday outside the custodial center. “She requested for faith-based books,” Fajardo added.
On Monday, Guo, also known as Guo Hua Ping, participated in a Senate hearing related to the investigation of Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators (POGO). Although she was actively involved in the hearing, it was reported that she skipped breakfast and only had water. Guo experienced stomach problems on Saturday because she had only tap water in her cell, but her lawyer brought her bottled water the next day to help with her discomfort.
Guo’s detention followed her arrest by Indonesian authorities in Jakarta on September 4. She returned to the Philippines on September 6 on a chartered flight. Her detention has drawn attention due to ongoing investigations into her alleged connections with POGO firms in Bamban.
Meanwhile, The Purpose Driven Life is a bestselling Christian book written by Rick Warren, first published in 2002. The book is designed to help readers discover and understand their life’s purpose through a Christian perspective.
