Netizen Shares Experience After Being Affected by Vog
VOLCANIC SMOG – A netizen who was reportedly affected by vog has issued a warning to the public.
Volcanic smog, or vog, is air pollution from volcanic activity, primarily consisting of sulfur dioxide (SO₂), which forms sulfuric acid when mixed with moisture, along with hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) and carbon dioxide (CO₂). Fine ash particles and water vapor also contribute to vog, creating a haze that can spread widely. Vog can irritate the respiratory system, eyes, and skin, and harm plants by reducing photosynthesis and acidifying soil. It also decreases visibility. To minimize its effects, stay indoors during high vog, use HEPA air purifiers, wear masks, and monitor local air quality reports.
A recent Facebook post by Louelle Roie has highlighted the effects of volcanic smog, or vog, from Taal Volcano’s ongoing activities. On August 19, Louelle shared his experience of being affected while traveling through Silang-Dasmariñas. While riding his motorcycle from Tuy, Batangas to Manila, he encountered heavy rain and continued driving with his raincoat on. The issue began when he accidentally rubbed his eyes with rain-wet hands, leading to itching, burning, and tearing. He stopped at a nearby gas station to wash his face and posted photos showing the condition of his eyes.
Louelle’s post led him to issue a public warning: “DO NOT GO OUT UNPROTECTED. DO NOT LET YOUR KIDS PLAY IN THE RAIN. You may not be from the place I mentioned, but it is still better to be safe. Take care everyone!!!”
In response to the volcanic activity, the Department of Health (DOH) has warned about the potential health risks of inhaling vog. Prolonged exposure can cause irritation to the eyes, throat, and respiratory tract, with severity depending on the concentration and duration of exposure.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) has also advised that sudden steam or phreatic explosions, volcanic earthquakes, light ashfall, and the release of toxic gases might occur. The warnings stress the importance of taking precautions to stay safe and protected during such volcanic activities, as the effects can be harmful and unpredictable.
