Mom and Sister of Mariah Carey Passed Away on the Same Day
MARIAH CAREY – The singer has announced the tragic deaths of her mother, Patricia, and her sister, Alison, who both passed away on the same day over the weekend.
In a statement to PEOPLE Magazine, Carey expressed profound grief, stating, “My heart is broken that I’ve lost my mother this past weekend. Sadly, in a tragic turn of events, my sister lost her life on the same day.” She added that she felt fortunate to have spent the last week with her mother before her passing and appreciated the support and respect for her privacy during this challenging time. The causes of Patricia and Alison’s deaths have not been disclosed.
Patricia Carey was an opera singer and vocal coach who was previously married to Alfred Roy Carey. Together, they had three children: Alison, Mariah, and Morgan. The couple divorced when Mariah was three years old. Mariah’s relationship with her mother was described as complex. In her 2020 memoir, The Meaning of Mariah Carey, she depicted their relationship as a mix of pride, pain, and admiration, acknowledging the emotional difficulties they faced.
Despite these complexities, Mariah and Patricia maintained contact. They performed a duet in 2010 for the ABC special Mariah Carey: Merry Christmas to You. Mariah also had a challenging relationship with her sister Alison. In her memoir, she mentioned that it was “emotionally and physically safer” to limit contact with Alison and Morgan at that time. The family’s intricate dynamics and their shared moments highlight the depth of Mariah’s recent loss and the significance of her family relationships.
Meanwhile, Mariah Carey is a renowned American singer-songwriter, record producer, and actress. Known for her remarkable five-octave vocal range and melismatic singing style, Carey has earned the title “Songbird Supreme” from Guinness World Records and was named the fifth greatest singer of all time by Rolling Stone in 2023.
