Why Was Carlos Yulo’s Family Not Present During His Arrival?
RODRIGO FRISCO – The grandfather of Carlos Yulo revealed that they received a text telling them not to welcome the two-time Olympic gold medalist upon his arrival.
The Filipino athletes who competed in the 2024 Paris Olympics returned to the Philippines on August 13, 2024, to a warm welcome from their families at Villamor Airbase. However, the absence of Yulo’s family raised questions, especially given the ongoing conflict between Carlos and his mother, Angelica Yulo.
Carlos’s grandfather, Rodrigo Frisco, who played a major role in Carlos’s gymnastics career, explained their absence. In an interview with ABS-CBN News, Rodrigo said they were disappointed because they were told not to attend the welcome event. According to Rodrigo, someone sent a message to Carlos’s father instructing them not to come, possibly at Carlos’s request.
“Hindi kami pinayagang pumunta doon… Nag-text daw sa papa niya na huwag na daw kaming sumama sa pagsalubong,” he said. This message spoiled what should have been a happy occasion, as the family had prepared to greet Carlos after his Olympic success.
Despite this setback, Rodrigo expressed his excitement about seeing his grandson at the upcoming homecoming parade for Carlos and the Philippine Olympic team, scheduled for August 14, 2024. The family planned to wait outside the Manila Hospital, where the parade would pass, eager to reunite with Carlos after a long time apart. Rodrigo mentioned that friends had even prepared banners and food for the occasion, showing the family’s anticipation.
The situation suggests that Carlos might be trying to avoid further public and media attention related to the sensitive issues with his mother by limiting his family’s involvement in public events. Rodrigo’s account, however, was without bitterness, reflecting his understanding of the situation and his continued support for his grandson.
