Video of Carlos Yulo Showcasing His Proficiency in Japanese Amazes Many
CARLOS YULO – A video of the two-time Olympic gold medalist displaying his fluency in Japanese during an interview with a Japanese reporter from PTN News has gone viral online.
The video captured Carlos conversing rapidly in Japanese, demonstrating his proficiency in the language. While the interview wasn’t translated, and the captions were in Japan’s writing systems—hiragana, katakana, and kanji—it appeared to focus on his experiences as both a student and an athlete in Japan.
Carlos began his journey in Japan in 2016 when he attended Teikyo University in Itabashi, Tokyo, under a scholarship from the Japan Olympic Association. While studying, he also trained as a gymnast, leading to significant growth in both his academic and athletic pursuits. In 2022, he graduated with an associate degree in Literature from Teikyo University. Carlos’s time in Japan not only honed his language skills but also prepared him for his historic achievements in gymnastics.
At the 2024 Paris Olympics, Carlos made history by becoming the first Filipino to win two gold medals in a single Olympic season. He secured gold in the men’s floor exercise and men’s vault, marking a milestone for the Philippines in Olympic gymnastics. His performances on the world stage, particularly at the World Artistic Gymnastics Championships, have earned him international recognition and solidified his status as one of the leading gymnasts in the sport.
In a recent interview with ABS-CBN, Carlos shared a touching message for his former coach, Munehiro Kugimiya. Beginning in 2016, Carlos trained under Coach Kugimiya’s guidance while studying at Teikyo University. Their seven-year partnership, which was instrumental in Carlos’s development as an athlete, ended amicably in 2023. Despite their parting, Carlos’s gratitude toward his coach remains evident, highlighting the deep impact Kugimiya had on his career.
