Angelu de Leon Addresses Criticism of Her Birthday Community Pantry

ANGELU DE LEON – The well-known actress and Pasig City councilor, faced criticism after a video of her giving away vegetables at a community pantry went viral.

The event was part of her Birthday Pasasalamat Community Pantry, held on August 10, 2024, ahead of her birthday on August 22. The video led to accusations that she was using the event for self-promotion, especially in connection with the GMA-7 primetime drama series “Pulang Araw,” in which she stars.

The criticism grew when some people online noticed that the video seemed to show Angelu giving out only five pieces of string beans to over 300 residents, which upset many. The video also hinted that Angelu asked the recipients to support her TV show, adding to the accusations of using the event for personal gain.

In response, Angelu de Leon explained the situation on social media. She clarified that the community pantry was a personal project she has been doing every year to give back to her community. Angelu explained that due to the high cost of vegetables, they had to divide some items, like the string beans, to make sure everyone got something. She expressed disappointment that her efforts were being misunderstood and defended her right to promote her show, saying, “I will promote ‘Pulang Araw’ because I am proud of our show.”
