Imane Khelif is Not a Transgender
IMANE KHELIF – The Algerian boxer is a natural-born woman according to the Algeria Olympic Committee.
The controversy surrounding the bout between Italian boxer Angela Carini and Algerian fighter Imane Khelif at the Paris 2024 Olympics has ignited significant debate. The fight, which lasted only 46 seconds, ended abruptly when Khelif’s powerful punches dislodged Carini’s chinstrap, bloodied her shorts, and caused Carini severe pain, leading her to withdraw.
Carini, who was heartbroken and described never having felt such a punch, prioritized her health and withdrew to honor her father. She emphasized that entering the ring was already a victory and chose to step down with dignity.
The controversy intensified due to Khelif’s background. Previously disqualified from the 2023 IBA Women’s World Boxing Championship due to gender eligibility issues, Khelif was allowed to compete in the Olympics.
Claims arose that Khelif, who is naturally female but has Disorder with Sex Development (DSD) resulting in XY chromosomes and elevated testosterone levels, might have an unfair advantage. Critics, including Reem Alsalem, the UN special rapporteur on violence against women and girls, and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, argued that athletes with male characteristics should not compete in women’s events.
However, it was confirmed that Khelif is biologically female. Algeria’s stance on gender identity prohibits any legal, physical, or medical sex changes, reflecting its strict policies. Despite this, Khelif’s participation, marked by both successes and challenges since 2018, has stirred ongoing debates about gender identity in sports and the impact of biological conditions on competition. This incident highlights the complexities at the intersection of sports regulations, gender identity, and biological diversity, raising questions about fairness and inclusion in athletic competition.
Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling is among those who reacted to the controversial bout. As of press time, the organizers of Paris Olympics 2024 have yet to issue any statement regarding the bout.
