Present Condition of OPM Icon Coritha
CORITHA – The OPM icon behind famous hits like “Oras Na,” “Lolo Jose,” “Sierra Madre,” and “Gising Na O Kuya Ko,” is now bedridden and unable to speak after suffering a stroke several years ago.
Luisito, or Chito Santos, the partner of Coritha, revealed the heartbreaking current condition of the renowned singer in an interview with Julius Babao. A significant event that contributed to her health decline was the burning of her house in Sacred Heart, Quezon City, in 2018, where she lost everything. Despite the fire, Coritha refused to leave the property, choosing to sleep on a folding bed without electricity.
Chito took Coritha to his home in Tagaytay, where she was still relatively strong. However, after eating two large soursops, she suffered a mild stroke, which led to a more severe one, as Chito described on Julius’s “Unplugged” vlog.
Chito shared their modest living conditions, residing in a small house surrounded by a garden. The video showed Coritha lying in bed with a plastic tube in her nose, unable to move but still responsive with her eyes. Chito explained that Coritha understands conversations and sometimes cries when hearing sad songs on TV.
The severity of her strokes, initially unnoticed, was linked to her diabetes. Despite doctors suggesting surgery, Chito declined after consulting his doctor sister, choosing to care for Coritha at home without oxygen, where she gradually stabilized. Chito vowed to look after her, refusing to let her pass away without a fight.
Their struggles are compounded by the need for Coritha’s medications, diapers, and milk, costing P2,000 every four days. Chito appealed for help, especially for the royalties owed to the OPM icon from Alpha Records, which they have yet to receive.
Despite their separation for 30 years, Chito found her again after hearing about the fire. Now, he promises never to leave her, fulfilling his long-held wish to be with her. For those wanting to help, details are in Julius Babao’s vlog. The hope is for the OPM icon to recover and for future generations to hear her beautiful songs again.
