Controversial Wheelchair Ramp Closed for Improvements

MMDA to Close Controversial Wheelchair Ramp

CLOSED FOR IMPROVEMENTS? – The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) announced the closure of the wheelchair ramp at the EDSA-Philam station in Quezon City for improvements, following widespread criticism.

MMDA Acting Chairman Romando Artes stated that a wheelchair lift would be installed, and the ramp would be adjusted to address concerns about its steepness. “Sa amin po kasing observation, wala halos gumagamit ng bus carousel na naka-wheelchair. Buti na lang na-criticize din po kami kaya napag-isipan naman po kung paano ia-address ‘yong issue,” he said.

Artes acknowledged that few wheelchair users currently utilize the bus carousel but appreciated the criticism, as it prompted the agency to consider necessary changes. The improvements and installation of the lift began on Saturday morning and are expected to take one to two months. During this period, the ramp will be closed, and commuters will need to use the stairs.

Interestingly, the government will not allocate additional funds for these improvements, as the contractor has agreed to cover all extra costs. Despite the criticism, Artes maintained that the ramp is not overly steep, attributing the perception to misleading angles in viral photos on social media.

According to ABS-CBN News, the National Council on Disability Affairs had earlier noted that the ramp posed difficulties for persons with disabilities. The MMDA acknowledged in a recent statement that the ramp was “imperfectly designed” due to height restrictions imposed by the Metro Rail Transit.

Despite these issues, Artes emphasized that the ramp was installed because it could still benefit many, including pregnant women, those with minor disabilities, and senior citizens.

Meanwhile, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) is a government agency in the Philippines that oversees the planning, monitoring, and coordination of services in Metro Manila. Its responsibilities include regulating traffic flow, implementing traffic rules, and managing major thoroughfares to improve transportation. The MMDA also focuses on public safety through disaster preparedness programs and emergency response. Additionally, it is involved in urban renewal and zoning, ensuring compliance with regulations and implementing development projects.
