Volcanic Ashfall – Things to Do Before, During and After

Things to Do When There is a Volcanic Ashfall

VOLCANIC ASHFALL – The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) has listed the necessary steps to take before, during, and after the hazard.

Mount Kanlaon, a 2,465-meter active volcano in the Philippines, has raised its alert level to 2 after an explosive eruption occurred on June 3. The eruption produced a 5,000-meter plume and a possible short pyroclastic density current extending 2-3 kilometers down the southern slopes. The eruption was followed by a strong volcanic earthquake, and communities on the western slope reported sulfurous odors and ashfall.

Before the Ashfall

It is essential to stay informed by listening to radio updates from authorities about any volcanic eruptions. Prepare an emergency kit with essential items such as a first aid kit, food, bottled water, flashlights, batteries, and other necessities. Make sure you have a dust mask and goggles to protect yourself from inhaling ash. Additionally, prepare a cleaning kit with supplies like a vacuum cleaner, broom, and mop. Don’t forget to have food and water for your pets, and find out the evacuation area and learn about your school’s emergency plan if you have children. Have indoor games and activities ready for kids to keep them occupied during the ashfall.

During the Ashfall

It is crucial to stay calm and remain indoors. Wear a dust mask and goggles to protect yourself from inhaling ash. Close all doors and windows at home and car to prevent ash from entering, and place a wet towel or blanket over doors to prevent ash from entering. Wash your vegetables and fruits thoroughly before eating them, and listen to radio updates about the volcanic eruption. Keep your pets indoors to avoid inhaling ash, and if driving, stop your vehicle on the side of the road if there’s a thick ashfall to avoid poor visibility. If you’re outside, wear glasses or contact lens cases to prevent ash from getting in your eyes.

After the Ashfall

It is important to take steps to remove the ash from your home and property. When there is no more ashfall, remove the ash from your roof to prevent collapse. Clean your roof with water to prevent corrosion, and remove the ash from your doors and windows at home and car using soap and water. Dispose of the ash in a place far from water drainage systems. Wash your pets’ food before feeding them, boil water before drinking it, and use detergent to wash clothes with ash residue. Finally, use a vacuum cleaner to clean your living room furniture, and wear a dust mask and goggles while cleaning.
