Rowena Guanzon Responds to Religious Opposition to Divorce Law
ROWENA GUANZON – P3PWD Party-list representative has a response for those who use religion to oppose the proposed divorce law in the country.
In her X post, Guanzon stated that she is a lawyer, not a religious theologian, and she believes in “freedom of religion” for everyone. However, the former Commission on Elections (Comelec) commissioner also said that those opposed to divorce should not impose their beliefs on people who believe everyone should be free to choose.
“On divorce: I am a lawyer, not a religious theologian. If religion is your basis for your opposition to divorce, then I have nothing to say to you. You have freedom of religion,” said Guanzon in her post. “But don’t impose it on us who believe people should have a choice. A choice,” she added.
The topic of divorce is currently a hot issue after the House approved House Bill No. 9349 or the Absolute Divorce Law on its third and final reading. Some individuals oppose this because they believe it goes against the Catholic Church’s teaching that marriage should always be sacred. It is noteworthy that a survey by Social Weather Stations (SWS) revealed that 50% of Filipinos support the legalization of divorce in the country.
Meanwhile, Rowena Guanzon is a prominent Filipino lawyer and politician. She has held various significant roles in government, most notably serving as a commissioner of the Commission on Elections (Comelec) in the Philippines. Known for her outspoken nature and strong advocacy on social and political issues, Guanzon has been actively involved in legal and political circles.
Guanzon is also associated with the P3PWD Party-list, which represents persons with disabilities (PWDs) in the Philippine Congress. Her legal background and experience in public service have made her a well-known figure in advocating for the rights and welfare of marginalized groups, including PWDs and women. She often engages in public discourse on critical issues such as divorce, demonstrating her commitment to progressive causes and legal reforms in the Philippines.
