Couple Finds $100,000 in Metal Safe After Metal Fishing
METAL FISHING – An American couple became instant millionaires after fishing out a metal safe containing a large sum of money.
James Kane and Barbie Agostino are metal fishers who use powerful magnets to retrieve metal objects from bodies of water. One day, they decided to try metal fishing in Flushing Meadows Corona Park in Queens, New York City. There, they reeled in a metal safe that contained $100,000, equivalent to PHP5.8 million, in cash.
James felt a mix of joy and fear, considering the possibility that the money might be linked to criminal activities. They immediately reported their discovery to the New York City police.
James discussed the situation on the Australian morning talk show The Project on June 3, 2024. He mentioned that due to New York City’s high crime rate, bystanders, friends, and family advised them to take the money and leave. However, they couldn’t do so because of legal concerns. The NYPD couldn’t trace the money back to any crime records, so they handed the money over to James and Barbie, making the couple $100,000 richer.
James described the money they found as not looking good. He said it resembled a muddy log rather than a neat stack of cash. Even though it looked bad, he explained that it could still be fixed by sending it to Washington D.C. for cleaning. Normally, it takes a long time, from six months to three years, to clean up money like this. However, James was hopeful that it wouldn’t take as long in this case.
According to PEP.ph, the couple plans to buy a house or prepare for their children’s future. James and Barbie started metal fishing as a hobby during the pandemic and turned it into YouTube content. Besides the money, they have found other valuable items such as jewels, diamonds, gold, pearls, coins, and rings. They have also discovered a World War II grenade and guns from the 19th century.
