Parents Should Not Give Money Garlands to Their Children During Graduation Ceremony
MONEY GARLAND – A teacher and content creator wrote a letter to all parents, asking them not to give money garlands to their children during graduation. Alice Ecila, in her Facebook post, said that parents showing off their wealth to other graduating students might make those students feel bad.
Money Garland is a big ribbon made by putting many paper bills together. She urged parents to refrain from presenting money garlands to their children at graduation, as it could negatively impact other kids’ self-esteem. She acknowledged parents’ intentions but highlighted the potential harm to other children’s feelings.
“Munting pakiusap para sa mga magulang na magbibigay ng Money Garland.. Sana po ay huwag ninyong isabit ito sa mga anak ninyo habang nagaganap ang seremonya ng graduation. Para ipakita sa mga tao na higit na sagana kayo kaysa sa nakararami. Alam ko po na ang magiging rason ninyo ay gusto ninyo, karapatan ninyo ‘yun, pero ang hindi ninyo po alam ay malaki ang epekto nito sa mga batang hindi mabbgyan ng ganyan,” she said.
She warned that witnessing others receive money garlands might provoke jealousy among children and lead them to devalue their own parents. “Magkakaroon sila ng inggit at mababang pagtingin sa kanilang mga magulang. Madami ang magsasabi ng ‘Sana All’ pero sa loob nila, ang iniisip ay ‘sana ako rin may ganun’. Paalala lamang ito at hindi ito pangongontra. Malay mo yung ibang magulang halos gumapang sa hirap mapagtapos lang ang kanilang mga anak. Be responsible in all our actions,” she said.
The post garnered significant attention on social media, with many users expressing contrasting viewpoints. May Ann suggested that the popularity of the post might incite jealousy among others, while Eleanor emphasized the importance of humility and equal access to education, regardless of socioeconomic status.
As of now, there aren’t any rules against giving money garlands at graduation.
