Clean the Puppies Well
It is important to really wipe the puppies well after they were born and to make sure that the sticky fluid that comes along with the placenta has been wipen away. However, you need to very careful in handling the puppy.
Provide a Warm Environment
Newborn puppies cannot regulate their body temperature until they are three (3) or four (4) weeks old. That is why it is important to make sure that they are in a warm environment by keeping them close to a heating lamp. Monitor the puppies. Once they are moving away from the light, it means that it is too warm for them and you need to make some adjustments. In case they are staying close to each other, they are most likely feeling cold and you need to adjust the lamp as well.
Feed them Every 2 Hours
One of the most important ways to take care of newborn puppies is to feed them every two (2) hours. They must be assisted in feeding every two (2) hours for a week or two since they were born. After the first two weeks, the feeding may be adjusted to a 3-hour or a 4-hour gap.
Observe the Puppies
It is important to observe the movement of the puppies to watch out for “poor doers” or also called the runts of the litter. They are those that do not grow quickly as their siblings. They may need extra care and attention most especially when it comes to the feeding.
Monitor the Puppies’ Weight
Also one of the ways on how to take care of newborn puppies is to monitor their weight. It is important to check their weight daily at the same time to check if their body mass have increased, remained, or reduced. An increasing weight is an indicator of the puppy doing well.
Keep their Environment Clean
It is important to always make sure they have clean pads. Also, wipe the dam or the mother dog with clothe soaked in clean water from time to time. It is best not to let the mother dog roam around.
