The first part of the Halo-Halo recipe is the list of ingredients. Each glass of this cold dessert will contain the following:

  • ¼ cup fresh or evaporated milk
  • 1 teaspoon sweetened saba or plantain bananas
  • 1 cup ice, crushed or shaved
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon sweetened sweet potatoes
  • 1 teaspoon sweetened garbanzos (chickpeas) or beans
  • 1 teaspoon sweetened red munggo
  • 1 teaspoon coconut strips
  • 1 teaspoon sago or tapioca pearls
  • 1 teaspoon fresh of sweetened langka jack fruit
  • 1 teaspoon nata de coco coconut gel
  • 1 tablespoon ube jam or 1 scoop of ube ice cream topping
  • 1 tablespoon leche flan topping

Instead of sago or tapioca pearls, you may also have jelly cut into cubes. The sugar is an optional ingredient depending on your taste preference.

The next part for this Halo-Halo recipe contains the steps on how to make this delicious cold treat to beat the heat. It may only take as fast as five (5) minutes as long as you already have all the ingredients. Here are the steps that you may follow:

Get a tall glass and put a teaspoon of each of the ingredients you prefer to have in your Halo-Halo. The amount actually depends on you because you can have more banana but skip the sweet potatoes just as how you like your Halo-Halo to be. Just make sure to leave some space for the shaved ice.

You can add sugar. Many people undeniably skip putting sugar as most of the ingredients in the Halo-Halo are already sweetened. Meanwhile, you can do so if you want.

Fill the remaining space of the glass with shaved ice. Make sure to push the ice down the glass and add more until you fill it to the brim.

Drizzle your Halo-Halo with milk and you can add some toppings that you want like a scoop of ice cream. Some people also add a slice of leche flan (You may also see the lechen flan recipe).

Halo-Halo is best served with a long spoon. Enjoy your cold treat amid the summer heat!
