Official statement of record label behind Shaira
AHS PRODUCTIONS – The record label that produced the song “Selos” by Shaira has issued a statement regarding the use of Lenka’s song melody.
Lenka has taken legal action against Shaira, known as the Queen of Bangsamoro pop, over her hit single “Selos.” Despite its popularity, the song was removed from music streaming platforms due to copyright issues. Social media reactions were mixed, with some defending Shaira while others supported Lenka’s actions, citing copyright law.
Following this, AHS Productions, representing Shaira, issued an official apology for the song’s unavailability on streaming platforms, explaining that they are working to resolve legal issues surrounding its release. They are in discussions with Lenka’s team to secure a cover license for “Selos,” which was originally based on Lenka’s “Trouble is a Friend.” AHS Productions expresses gratitude to listeners for embracing Shaira’s cover, initially released for entertainment purposes. They express pride in Shaira’s recognition as the “Queen of Bangsamoro Pop” and hope for continued support upon the song’s re-upload.
As of now, Shaira has not released any statement regarding the issue.
Regarding song copyright law, it grants creators exclusive rights over their songs, including reproduction, distribution, performance, and creation of derivative works. Copyright protection is automatic upon creation and lasts for the creator’s lifetime plus a certain number of years. Creators can enforce their copyright against infringement and may choose to register their songs for additional legal protection. Licensing allows creators to grant permission for others to use their songs in exchange for royalties.
Meanwhile, “Selos” by Shaira appears to have been reposted by AHS Productions online. The song became trending again following the issue with Lenka. As of press time, it has garnered over 9 million views, three months since it was uploaded on YouTube.
