The Killing of Dog ‘Killua’ has been Condemned in Senate
STOP ANIMAL CRUELTY – Two senators condemned the killing of a Golden Retriever named “Killua” in Camarines Sur.
Expressing dismay and anger over the incident, Senator Grace Poe, who authored the proposed Revised Animal Welfare Act, lamented the mauling of Killua in a statement. According to surveillance footage, the dog leaped from their house’s roof and allegedly attacked a resident before being chased and fatally beaten by a man. Poe emphasized the excessive violence evident in the CCTV video, indicating that Killua was the one being pursued.
While Poe acknowledged that the legal process will determine the outcome, she stressed the importance of public awareness regarding laws against the cruel treatment of animals, particularly the Animal Cruelty Act of 1998.
In response to numerous reports of animal cruelty, neglect, and abandonment, Poe introduced Senate Bill 2458, advocating for Mandatory Animal Welfare Education in primary and secondary education. The proposed Revised Animal Welfare Act also aims to establish a Barangay Animal Welfare Task Force to address animal welfare issues promptly.
Additionally, the proposed measure seeks to set standards promoting responsible pet ownership and ensuring ethical behavior from those caring for animals. Poe expressed hope for the swift passage of the bill through the Senate Committee on Agriculture to prevent further incidents like the tragic fate of Killua. During a privileged speech at the Senate plenary, Poe, along with other senators and animal welfare groups, brought their pet dogs to emphasize their support for animal welfare.
Senator JV Ejercito, who brought his dog “Nick,” strongly condemned Killua’s brutal killing, stating that such acts of violence violate principles of compassion and decency. He emphasized the urgency of passing Senate Bill 2458, the Revised Animal Welfare Act, championed by Senator Grace Poe, to strengthen laws protecting animal welfare and prevent similar tragedies.
