After Eight Months, Wallet Lost at Sea Washes Ashore
LOST AND FOUND – A wallet that was lost at sea has washed ashore after eight months.
Eight months ago, Marcie Callawaert lost her wallet at sea while boarding a boat near Tofino, a town on Vancouver Island, Canada. She accidentally dropped it into the water while transitioning from a canoe to the boat. Despite efforts to retrieve it with a diver’s help, the wallet remained elusive. However, on a recent stroll with her dogs along a remote beach in British Columbia, Marcie spotted something familiar among the washed-up debris – her old wallet.
In a TikTok video uploaded on February 15, 2024, Marcie recounted the incident. She explained that she had forgotten to zip her backpack where the wallet was stored, leading to its plunge into the ocean. Initially assuming the splash was just water, she only realized her mistake later. Despite attempting to locate it with a diver’s assistance, the wallet remained submerged.
“It was dropped just offshore of this beach in about 20 feet of water,” she said. “I had to wait for the winter Southeast winds to bring it ashore,” she added.
Marcie expressed her surprise and joy at finding her wallet intact, still containing cash, bank cards, licenses, and ID, albeit with a rusted zipper. She confessed to initially giving up hope and replacing her IDs and bank cards. The video garnered significant attention, accumulating over 552K views, 2.2K comments, and 12K shares.
Amidst playful suggestions from netizens about her luck and speculation about mystical forces at play, Marcie explained the natural process that brought her wallet back to shore. She relied on the Southeast winds of winter to push it back onto the beach. Though uncertain if the tide had swept it out to sea, she remained hopeful. Marcie also joked about her “good karma” for regularly cleaning up beach debris, suggesting it might have played a role in the wallet’s return.
