A man in Bacolod City was caught stealing cologne from a store
BACOLOD CITY – A man was arrested for allegedly stealing cologne after being caught by a security guard.
Milandro Diero, the security guard at the grocery store, expressed his anger towards the suspect. During the confrontation, the suspect sprayed cologne into Diero’s eyes as he tried to return the stolen item. Despite attempting to flee, the suspect was eventually apprehended.
Diero mentioned that the suspect had two accomplices and was a regular visitor to the store. This wasn’t the first time the suspect had allegedly committed theft in the area.
The suspect confessed to the crime, stating that he took the cologne to spray himself because he hadn’t bathed for several days. The police arrested the suspect and plan to investigate if he has a criminal record in other areas. Authorities issued a reminder for stores to install CCTV cameras, emphasizing their importance as part of the requirements for obtaining a business permit.
Meanwhile, in the Philippines, theft is defined under Article 308 of the Revised Penal Code as the act of taking personal property of another with the intent to gain, without the owner’s consent. The law does not specify a minimum amount for theft to occur. A complaint for theft can be filed for as little as 750 pesos, and the penalties vary based on the value of the stolen property and other circumstances.
While making amends, such as returning the stolen money, may influence the co-worker to drop the complaint, it does not absolve one of legal liability. Regardless of the amount stolen, criminal charges may apply, ranging from arresto menor to prison mayor, depending on various factors. If a complaint is filed, seeking immediate legal advice is crucial to understand the legal consequences and explore possible defenses or plea arrangements.
