Netizens were not amused by the hosting of Jo Koy at the Golden Globes 2024
JO KOY – The hosting of the Filipino-American in the 2024 Golden Globes received a mixed response as viewers criticized his “tasteless” and “awkward” jokes.
During his monologue, Jo Koy targeted nominated movies and actors, but many jokes fell flat, and he struggled to connect with the audience and celebrity guests. One controversial moment involved Jo Koy’s dig at the movie “Barbie,” which was labeled as “misogynist.” He commented on the character’s physical appearance, stating, “Barbie was based on a plastic doll with big boobs,” and joked about being attracted to a plastic doll.
Another target was Christopher Nolan’s film “Oppenheimer,” where Jo Koy complained about its length, saying it needed more backstory. He humorously declared a New Year’s resolution to finish watching the three-hour film in 2025.
A joke about Taylor Swift and her relationship with football player Travis Kelce received a cold response, even from Taylor herself. Jo Koy compared the Golden Globes to the NFL, noting fewer camera shots of Taylor, referencing her connection to the football world.
Despite the negative reactions, Jo Koy defended himself, acknowledging the short notice for the hosting gig and pointing out that some jokes were written by others. He emphasized that not all jokes landed well with the audience.
While many criticized Jo Koy’s performance, there were moments that elicited laughter. Some of the lighter moments included jokes about Barry Keoghan’s role in the movie “Saltburn,” poking fun at the attention garnered by a nude dancing scene. Jo Koy also teased Robert De Niro about becoming a father at an advanced age, with De Niro seen smiling in response.
In a more light-hearted comment, Jo Koy amused Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos and the audience by joking about Prince Harry and Meghan Markle getting paid millions by Netflix for doing nothing. Despite the criticism, Jo Koy’s hosting included moments that resonated positively with certain members of the audience.
