DRIVER’S LICENSE RENEWAL REQUIREMENTS – Here are the documents required by the Land Transportation Office to renew a driver’s license.

Thousands, if not millions, of people in the Philippines own a vehicle. It may be a motorcycle, a four-wheeled vehicle, or more. Also, there is a huge population of drivers across the nation. Thus, many people are living with a constant mandate to maintain the validity of their driver’s license.

In the country, it is the Land Transportation Office or more popularly called LTO which issues driver’s license to eligible drivers. The applicants must pass both the written and actual exams set by the government entity tasked for the traffic and driving rules in the country.

For a driver to avoid the fine, he/she must always bring his/her valid LTO driver’s license. Also, the type of vehicle being driven must match the type of driver’s license that he/she possesses. The driver’s license has an expiration thus it has to be renewed on or before the date of expiry.

Drivers and vehicle owners must be aware that there are driver’s license renewal requirements that must be prepared and submitted in renewing the card. The renewal is open for the following:

  • individuals who have a non-professional or professional LTO driver’s license or a conductor’s license which is not expired for over two years
  • a cardholder who is leaving the Philippines soon and a holder of a non-professional, professional, or conductor’s license that is due for renewal within a year

With regards to the driver’s license renewal requirements, it depends if the license is expired for over two (2) years or not at the time of the renewal. It is best to prepare them before booking an appointment at the LTO portal.

Here are the documents required by LTO from local applicants whose driver’s license is not expired for more than two (2) years:

  • duly-accomplished application form
  • original driver’s license
  • original and photocopy of government-issued ID that bearing your photo and signature
  • copy of the medical examination certificate (only electronically transmitted to the LTO by an accredited clinic)
  • Passed Comprehensive Driver’s Education (CDE) Certificate

In case the driver’s license is expired for more than two (2) years already, you will have to submit the following:

  • duly-accomplished application form
  • photocopy of passport covering the following areas: first page, visa page, and departure in the Philippines and latest arrival overseas
  • within 30 days of arrival of the license holder, he/she must submit the following documents at the LTO branch where the renewal was processed:
    • photocopy of passport (first and arrival pages)
    • copy of the medical examination certificate (only electronically transmitted to the LTO by an accredited clinic)
    • original manual Official Receipt (OR)

There is a different set of driver’s license renewal requirements for overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) who are still in abroad at the time of the renewal processing. Here are the documents required by the LTO:

  • duly-accomplished application form
  • criginal expired driver’s/conductor’s license
  • copy of the medical examination certificate (only electronically transmitted to the LTO by an accredited clinic)
