Cedrick Juan on his role in ‘GomBurza’
CEDRICK JUAN – The actor admitted that his role in the Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) film entry “GomBurZa” was almost a missed opportunity.
“GomBurZa” is a historical movie that tells the story of the Catholic priests Mariano Gomez, Jose Burgos, and Jacinto Zamora who were executed in February 1872. The actor played the role of Padre Jose Burgos in the film.
Cedrick won as Best Actor at the MMFF 2023 Gabi ng Parangal as “GomBurZa” won 2nd Best Picture, Best Cinematography, Best Sound, Best Production Design, Best Director award for Pepe Diokno, and the Gatpuno Antonio J. Villegas Cultural Award.
After the MMFF 2023 awards night, Cedrick said in an interview over CNN Philippines’ New Day last December 29 that he chanced on the movie’s online audition last October 2022, but that he was already busy with the play “Mula sa Buwan” where he starred as “Maximo” at that time.
The actor shared that he didn’t pass an online audition for “GomBurza”, but come the end of December, the talent coordinator of the movie asked him to audition “but it wasn’t Burgos”.
He also said that he was first asked to audition for the role of Ferdinand La Madrid, who played a role in the Cavite mutiny, in the film before “manifesting” to read for the role of Padre Jose Burgos.
According to him, the film’s production team had been looking for someone to take on the role of Padre Jose Burgos since 2020, before it was decided for him to take on the titular character.
“They’ve been looking for an actor to play Padre Burgos for so long since 2020. It’s really a pivotal role, that’s why they’re really having a hard time getting the role for that,” Cedrick said.
