Miss Universe 2023, or the 72nd edition of the Miss Universe pageant, has finally kicked off. The reigning Miss Universe, R’Bonney Gabriel of the United States, will crown her successor at the end of the competition, which will take place at the José Adolfo Pineda Arena in San Salvador, El Salvador, on November 18, 2023.
Contestants from 84 countries and territories will compete in various segments, including swimsuit, evening gown, and interview rounds, showcasing their beauty, intelligence, and advocacy. The event also includes special awards, such as Voice For Change, where contestants share their advocacies.
The pageant is known for its diverse and inclusive representation, with the 2023 edition allowing the participation of married women and women with children for the first time since 1957. The competition aims to celebrate beauty, diversity, and empowerment, with the winner becoming an ambassador for charitable causes during her reign.
Earlier, the candidates showed off their ensembles in the national costume round. Among the standout contestants is none other than the Philippines’ representative, Michelle Dee. During the national costume presentation, the actress-beauty queen showcased a costume inspired by her role as a military reservist in the Philippine Air Force.
The ensemble, designed by Michael Barassi, goes beyond the traditional idea of an “AIRPLANE,” representing resilience, radiance, and the readiness of the Philippines to embrace the Universe. The costume serves as a poignant metaphor for the Filipino diaspora, symbolizing the connection between dreams and home, embodying the nation’s defining resilience.
The Philippine Air Force-inspired national costume has elicited mixed reactions from netizens, especially Filipino pageant fans.
Meanwhile, aside from Michelle Dee, among the standout candidates in the national costume presentation is El Salvador’s representative, Isabella Garcia-Manzo. During the second day of the preliminary competition, she ignited the runway with her volcano-themed national costume.
