SENYORA – Here are the details about the famous social media personality particularly her origin as well as some of her issues.
Senyora Santibañez is a well-known internet meme and image macro that depicts Chantal Andere, the primary antagonist of the Mexican telenovela “Marimar,” portrayed as a typical and arrogant Filipino hacienda owner. This character achieved significant popularity and online recognition in the Philippines, especially following the successful “Marimar” remake. Senyora Santibañez frequently participates in political conversations, notably advocating for former President Rodrigo Duterte.
ORIGIN
The meme originated during the “Marimar” remake, gaining attention from local media and inspiring various versions. It was notably voted the best meme of 2012. On November 11, 2012, a Facebook fan page dedicated to Senyora Santibañez emerged, later becoming known as Senyora. This character embodied the classic trope of a patronizing haciendera and frequently discussed news topics, especially in the realm of politics. By June 17, 2023, the Facebook account had accumulated an impressive 6.5 million followers.
Her impact extended beyond the realm of memes. For example, during an incident involving Pia Wurtzbach and former President Joseph Estrada, Senyora enhanced the meme by incorporating a snippet from Maja Salvador’s “Kilig.” Furthermore, in October 2022, Senyora was even featured in a Halloween costume worn by a celebrity.
Remarkably, Senyora joined forces with Senator Nancy Binay and ABS-CBN to introduce a book titled “Make Love Not War.” The book’s purpose was to counter criticisms on social media and address concerns related to online trolls.
ISSUES
Senyora has encountered its share of controversies. In 2019, there was criticism when she promoted Joyride PH on Twitter, which raised suspicions about the company’s intentions. Eventually, the tweet was removed. Additionally, she was implicated in what’s known as “micro-media manipulation” in the lead-up to the 2019 midterm general elections.
There were allegations that the individual behind her was involved in disseminating political propaganda and spreading false information on social media, particularly in support of Duterte. Furthermore, in 2021, her name appeared in documents related to her participation in amplifying pro-Duterte propaganda for Twinmark Media Enterprises, Inc.
