Leachon resigns as DOH special adviser
DR. TONY LEACHON – The Department of Health (DOH) has confirmed the resignation of the special adviser of the agency, acknowledging his decision to prioritize his family. The DOH expressed its openness to any well-intentioned offers of assistance as they continue working together towards Universal Health Care (UHC).
Leachon tendered his resignation just a month after being appointed as the Special Adviser for Non-Communicable Diseases. He cited a hearing in which a lawmaker labeled him as “not a public health expert” as an eye-opening experience. He also mentioned a desire to shield his family from the relentless attacks against him.
He emphasized that defending one’s qualifications in the public eye was not productive, and at this stage, he felt no need to prove himself further. Despite these challenges, Leachon, who identifies as an independent health reform advocate, expressed his noble aspirations and commitment to serving the country.
Health Secretary Ted Herbosa clarified that Leachon would continue to serve as a volunteer consultant for the Health Department. The DOH recognized that, in the pursuit of Universal Health Care (UHC), all offers of assistance and support, that could benefit every Filipino, should be considered.
It’s worth noting that Leachon had previously served as a special consultant of the National Task Force Against COVID-19 during the Duterte administration but was removed from his post due to his critical stance on the government’s response to the COVID-19 crisis.
Meanwhile, the Department of Health is the executive department of the government of the Philippines responsible for ensuring access to basic public health services by all Filipinos through the provision of quality health care, the regulation of all health services and products.
