NBI arrests three individuals for selling registered SIM cards
NBI – Three individuals were arrested by the National Bureau of Investigation in Pasay City for allegedly engaging in the sale of registered SIM cards.
The NBI Cybercrime Division (NBI-CCD) conducted separate operations on September 8, resulting in the arrest of Beverly Cruz, Keone Lebumfacil, and Aljon Reyes. The NBI initiated these operations based on information suggesting that these individuals were marketing registered SIM cards on Facebook, which were suspected to be used for fraudulent activities.
An individual using the pseudonym “Nopce Naldz” posted on a Facebook group, offering 1,000 SIM cards for sale. Subsequently, this account agreed to meet with a poseur buyer at a convenience store in Pasay. Cruz attended the meeting and handed over three SIM cards to the undercover buyer for verification – one was registered, and the other two were unregistered. Following the receipt of payment, the NBI apprehended Cruz.
Meanwhile, another Facebook account under the name “Armando Samling” made multiple posts claiming to have thousands of SIM cards available for sale. After agreeing to a deal with Samling, the poseur buyer opted for a delivery arrangement, and a delivery rider was dispatched to pick up the SIM cards. Lebumfacil and Reyes were subsequently taken into custody after receiving payment for the SIM cards.
The NBI reported the confiscation of a total of 1,023 SIM cards. The three individuals were subjected to inquest proceedings at the Office of the City Prosecutor in Pasay, facing charges related to Section 7 of the SIM Registration Act in connection with Section 6 and Section 4 of the Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012.
