President Bongbong Marcos on Susan ‘Toots’ Ople: “It’s a very very sad news. I have lost a friend. The Philippines has lost a friend.”

SUSAN “TOOTS” OPLE – President Bongbong Marcos lamented the death of the Secretary of the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW).

Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) Spokesperson Toby Nebrida said in a statement on Tuesday that Secretary Ople died at 1:00 p.m. today. According to the spokesperson, Secretary Ople was surrounded by her family and loved ones.

The DMW spokesperson also asked the public to pray for Secretary Ople and her family.

President Bongbong Marcos said in a chance interview in Sta. Rosa, Laguna on Tuesday that he himself has lost a friend. He also praised Secretary Ople’s excellent service to the people.

The President said Secretary Ople is a special person with a deep compassion for the people that she had cared for, mainly the migrant workers, adding that Secretary Ople’s sudden death is a great loss for the Philippines.

It’s a very very sad news. I have lost a friend. The Philippines has lost a friend,” the President said. “It is a great loss for all of us, it is great loss for all of us who called her a friend, it is a great loss to the Philippines, to the service that we know she could still have rendered.

Susan ‘Toots’ Ople is the daughter of Blas Ople, the labor secretary of late President Ferdinand Marcos who also served as foreign affairs secretary of former President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo.

It can be recalled that Secretary Ople took a wellness break in late July to grieve the passing of her two elder brothers, former journalist Blas Ople Jr. and ex-Hagonoy mayor Felix “Toti” Ople, who both succumbed to lung cancer.
