Pura Luka Vega reacts to Persona Non Grata declarations against him
PURA LUKA VEGA – The controversial drag performer has reacted to the persona non grata declarations issued against him.
The drag artist made headlines after singing and dancing to a remix version of “Ama Namin” while dressed as Jesus. He proudly shared the video on his Twitter account with the caption, “Thank you for coming to church!” which sparked intense discussion in the online world.
The video quickly went viral and drew reactions from various politicians and members of religious groups. According to the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP), his actions can be considered “mockery” and “blasphemous.” His performance was also criticized by Geraldine Roman, the representative of the 1st District of Bataan and an advocate for the LGBTQIA+ community.
However, the drag queen stood by his controversial performance, stating that it is a “form of art and expression.” He also emphasized that this was his way of praising God.
Because of the controversial video, several local government units declared him persona non grata. This includes the towns of Toboso in Negros Occidental and Floridablanca in Pampanga, as well as General Santos City, province of Bukidnon, and Manila City.
On Twitter, which is now known as X, Pura Luka Vega shared his thoughts about the persona non grata declarations issued against him by several LGUs. “Tell me EXACTLY what I did wrong. I’m open for a dialogue and yet cities have been declaring persona non grata without even knowing me or understanding the intent of the performance. Drag is art. You judge me yet you don’t even know me,” he noted.
