Meta announced that Facebook Messenger Lite App will no longer be available after September 18, 2023.
FACEBOOK MESSENGER LITE APP – Tech company Meta Platforms Inc. (Meta) announced that the lite version of Facebook Messenger will not be available after September 18, 2023.
The said app is no longer available on Google Play Store as of this writing. If you have a Messenger Lite on your phone, you will see a prompt saying “For this phone, we recommend Messenger” upon opening the app.
As seen in the prompt, it stated that the app is going away and will not be available after September 18, 2023. In addition, it also stated that chats and everything from Messenger Lite is still available in Messenger.
The announcement comes after Meta announced big change for its primary messaging platform. According to Meta, Android users will no longer be able to use Messenger as their default SMS app after September 28, 2023.
In a report on Tech Crunch, a Meta spokesperson said that users who are using the Messenger Lite app for Android will be directed to Facebook Lite or Messenger in order to send and receive messages on Messenger starting August 21, 2023.
About Messenger Lite
It can be recalled that the tech company launched Messenger Lite for Android in 2016. Aiming at less powerful Android phones, this mobile app offers Messenger’s core features while using less storage space and processing power.
The lite version of Messenger only became available in the Philippines in 2017 and has become available for all Android devices eventually. The tech company also released Messenger Lite for iOS but it was discontinued in 2020.
