Where the rubber meets the road was one of many Madison Avenue principles that Will Jones discussed in 1956’s After Last Night column. The center of American advertising is Madison Avenue. Erskine Johnson brought attention to this term in a different column he wrote for the Dixon Evening Telegraph that same year. This expression was also classified as commercial lingo by Gene Sherman of the Los Angeles Times’ Cityside and Al Osborne of the Binghamton Press’ Matter of Fact in 1957.
