Lea Salonga reacts to viral video of her declining request of fans to take a photo with her backstage
LEA SALONGA – The singer has addressed the viral video that showed her declining some fans’ request to take a backstage photo with her. The video, shared by Facebook user Cristopher Retokelly Carpila, captured fans waiting outside Salonga’s dressing room after a Broadway performance of “Here Lies Love.”
In the video, Salonga politely explained to the fans that she couldn’t allow them into her dressing room if they weren’t on the guest list due to security concerns. She elaborated that granting their request could open the door for others to take advantage of the situation.
Carpila expressed his disappointment with the incident on Facebook, hoping that as fellow Filipinos and fans, they would be given at least a little respect and allowed to take a picture, even if it meant not being able to hug or beso Salonga. The Facebook clip has garnered over 1.7 million views and generated mixed reactions among netizens.
Breaking her silence on the matter, Salonga took to Twitter to explain her perspective. In one tweet, she reminded people about her boundaries and asked them not to cross them. In another post, she shared a video interview where she further elaborated on the reasons behind setting boundaries as an artist.
Salonga explained that while she appreciates her fans, personal boundaries and space need to be respected. She highlighted the concern about potential dangers when strangers approach her, stating that she may not always want to give a hug because she doesn’t know their intentions. She mentioned the paranoia that many artists have and the possibility of encountering someone with ill intentions.
According to Salonga, artists have the responsibility to keep themselves safe, and the actions of assistants, managers, and bodyguards are in place to ensure that fans still have an idol to admire in the future.
