The idea of limbo—a realm on the edge between heaven and hell—has long been a feature of Roman Catholic theology.

Two different kinds of limbo are described:

The phrase “Limbus Patrum” alludes to the place where Old Testament saints were believed to have been until Christ’s “descent into hell.”

Unbaptized infants and mentally handicapped adults who passed away with original sin but no actual sin is meant to be housed in Limbus Infantum. They are said to be denied heaven rather than being condemned to damnation.

As theologians discussed what would happen to newborns who were not baptized, this idea emerged during the Middle Ages. While some Church Fathers, such as Augustine, insisted that baptism was a need for salvation, others thought that newborns who were not baptized were granted eternal life. In the past, theologians have described limbo as a location between heaven and hell.
