ABS-CBN to shut down TeleRadyo; Here’s the reason why
TELERADYO – ABS-CBN Corporation has announced that its news channel will cease operations effective June 30, 2023. The parent company cited financial losses dating back to 2020 as the reason for this decision.
In a statement released on Tuesday, May 23, 2023, ABS-CBN noted, “TeleRadyo has been incurring financial losses since 2020. Since ABS-CBN can no longer sustain TeleRadyo’s operations, ABS-CBN is left with no choice but to cease the operations of TeleRadyo effective 30 June 2023 to prevent further business losses. The company is deeply saddened by this closure and having to part ways with the many passionate and committed people who have made TeleRadyo an important source of news and information for many Filipinos.”
TeleRadyo was available for viewing on platforms such as Facebook, YouTube, and other online platforms of ABS-CBN. Despite this development, ABS-CBN is reportedly finding ways to continue delivering news to the public. They are said to be entering into a partnership with a new news company.
DZMM, the AM radio station of ABS-CBN, first aired on July 22, 1986, through the program hosted by veteran radio anchor Fidela “Tiya Dely” Magpayo. Tiya Dely, Noli “Kabayan” de Castro, Ernie “Ka Ernie” Baron, and Cesar “Kuya Cesar” Lacbu Nucum were among the pioneers of the station. The initials “MM” in DZMM stand for “Malayang Mamamayan.”
In 2007, DZMM elevated its programming by featuring its anchors on television in addition to radio broadcasts. This led to the station being known as DZMM TeleRadyo.
Alongside the farewell of ABS-CBN Channel 2 on May 5, 2020, the broadcasting of DZMM TeleRadyo was also halted. This occurred after Congress, during the administration of former President Rodrigo Duterte, denied ABS-CBN a new franchise.
However, after several weeks, the news channel returned online and was named TeleRadyo. Now, after almost three years, it is bidding farewell.
