Farmer, 60, allegedly passed away due to a heat stroke
ILOCOS SUR – A 60-year-old farmer was found dead in a field in Magsingal town allegedly due to a heat stroke. The victim was identified as Oliver Ugale, a resident of Barangay Panay Sur.
The victim’s family and authorities believed that heat stroke was the cause of his death, as there were no visible bruises or injuries found on his body. The victim was immediately buried.
Authorities reminded the public to avoid prolonged exposure to the sun’s heat as heat stroke can affect people of any age. “Kapag ganitong panahon at nabilad sa matinding init ng araw ang isang katawan, nawawalan ng ability na i-regulate ng ating katawan ‘yung init na pumapasok sa ating katawan. So kapag nagtagal iyon, maari talagang mauwi sa kamatayan. ‘Yun ang tinatawag nating heat stroke,” said Dr. Rheuel Bobis, spokesperson of the Department of Health-Center for Health Development Region 1.
Meanwhile, heat stroke is a dangerous medical condition caused by prolonged exposure to high temperatures and humidity, which overwhelms the body’s temperature regulation system. The symptoms of this kind of stroke include high body temperature, altered mental state, nausea, vomiting, rapid breathing, flushed skin, and muscle cramps or weakness. Severe cases can lead to seizures, coma, and even death, and those at higher risk are the elderly, young children, and people with chronic medical conditions.
Preventing this kind of stroke involves staying hydrated, avoiding prolonged exposure to high temperatures, taking breaks in cool areas, wearing loose-fitting clothing, and using sunscreen. If someone shows signs of a stroke, emergency medical assistance should be called immediately, and they should be moved to a cool, shaded area while waiting for help to arrive. Heat stroke is a more severe heat-related illness than heat exhaustion.
