Left Out In The Cold Definition, Sentence Examples

LEFT OUT IN THE COLD MEANING – Find out what left out in the cold really means. Example sentences of this idiomatic expression can also be found here.

The idiom “left out in the cold” conjures up the idea of a person who is refused entry to a home and is forced to wait outside in the cold. The expression probably first appeared in the late 19th century when it had that exact meaning.

People quickly interpreted it to indicate being excluded from a social gathering, a refuge, information, and other things. By the time John Le Carre published The Spy Who Came in from the Cold, an espionage book, in 1963, it had long before becoming a cliche. The protagonist of the book travels back to the West from communist East Germany. The main character was, metaphorically, left outside in the cold.
