If you’ve ever been called a damp blanket, it’s time to learn the origin of the phrase. The answer may surprise you.
Cooks have placed damp blankets on the floor of the kitchen since the 1870s to be ready in case of a grease fire. Such fires were actually pretty common at the period, so having a wet blanket on hand would allow them to swiftly extinguish the flames and get back to eating. Because flames may be somewhat exhilarating, the expression “wet blanket” was coined to describe someone who seemed to constantly swiftly take the fun out of a situation.
Meaning:
- a person who ruins other people’s fun.
- a person who always seems to sap the joy of another individual or group.
- A “wet blanket” is someone who appears to be uninterested in anything.
