LEAD ASTRAY MEANING – Find out what lead astray really means. Example sentences of this idiomatic expression can also be found here.

It is thought that France is where the phrase “lead astray” first appeared in the early 14th century. The word was nativized from the French verb estraier, which means to wander or run off. The phrase was mostly used to describe animals roaming the streets, such as cattle and horses without a master.

According to a different explanation, the idiom was taken from the Vulgar Latin term estragere, which is a contraction of the verb estravagere. It implies straying from the road of virtue or to stray outside of it.
