SIM REGISTRATION – NPC Orders Telcos To Create Separate Page For “Promotional” Option

The NPC ordered telcos to create a separate page for their “promotional” option in the SIM registration

SIM REGISTRATION – The National Privacy Commission (NPC) ordered telecommunications companies to create a separate page for their “promotional” option in the SIM registration.

Today, December 30, 2022 is the fourth day of nationwide SIM registration in the country as telecommunications companies already started implementing the Republic Act No. 11934 or the “SIM Registration Act”.

In a statement on Friday, the NPC said that Privacy Commissioner John Henry Naga ordered telcos to include the notices and tick boxes that are not related to SIM registration on a separate page.

NPC also said Globe Telecom and Smart communications told them that the additional tick boxes that include the “promotional” option were just “optional”, adding that DITO Telecommunity didn’t include checkboxes asking for consent on profiling, marketing, or sharing with third-party partners.

In addition, the NPC said that the telecommunications companies committed to implementing the changes on their registration portals during the meeting held Thursday “as soon as possible”.

Telcos also assured that the users also have the option to opt-out of receiving promotional alerts,” the NPC said. “The Commission will continue to closely coordinate with Telcos and other stakeholders for the proper implementation of the law.

The order from the NPC came after some mobile phone users aired concerns that SIM registrants might be inadvertently giving companies their consent or permission to use their personal data for profiling, marketing, or sharing with third-party partners because those notices were put alongside tick boxes related to the SIM registration.

It follows the directive of the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) for some telecommunications companies to explain the additional options given while registering a SIM (subscriber identity module).
