The allusion to staying awake at night comes from the owl’s traits. Although it appears that the name “Owl” was used literally, the first known literary use of the expression was in Bell and Foxe’s “Against Jerome Osorius” in the year 1581.

The idiom was not used figuratively until very recently, in the way that it is now. Shakespeare used it in The Rape of Lucrece in 1594.
