Senator Bong Go has appealed for continued support for Filipino athletes.
SENATOR BONG GO – The senator has appealed for the government to continue its extensive support for Filipino athletes.
The senator, who is the chairman of the Senate Committee on Sports, made the appeal when he sponsored the proposed 2023 budgets of the Games and Amusement Board (GAB) and the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) on the Senate floor.
Senator Go stressed the importance of having adequate funding in order to support necessary sports programs that would hone the skills and would boost the confidence of Filipino athletes, especially in the grassroots.
In particular, the proposed budget of the Philippine Sports Commission for 2023 was increased by PHP 1 billion to include preparations, training and participation of the country’s athletes in the upcoming Paris Olympics, Asian Games, Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games), ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) Para-games, and other international competitions.
Also included in the proposed budget are additional support for the hosting of the 2023 FIBA World Cup, financial assistance to athletes, sports infrastructure development, and grassroots sports development initiatives such as the Philippine National Games which the senator plans to institutionalize once legislated into law.

The senator, who is also vice chairman of the Senate Committee on Finance, highlighted the need to further secure more funds for the National Academy of Sports (NAS) in the New Clark City Sports Complex, citing that it would significantly benefit more aspiring Filipino athletes.
According to a report, the NAS is a government-run learning facility that offers a secondary education program with an integrated special curriculum on sports which was developed in close coordination with the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) and the Department of Education (DepEd).
Senator Go reminded the Philippine Sports Commission to further strengthen its sports programs and to also ensure that the approved budget would be strictly and efficiently utilized in accordance with its mandates and the law to make certain that Filipino athletes receive the necessary support they deserve.
