OPS Usec-OIC Cheloy Garafil: “Naging usapan namin last week, pinatawag niya ako and he said na kailangan ng someone sa OPS na makatulong”
GARAFIL — Cheloy Velicaria-Garafil recently spoke about accepting the offer to help the Office of the Press Secretary (OPS) as its Undersecretary and Officer-in-charge (OIC).
Garafil told reporters on Monday that President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. tapped her to transfer to Malacañang last week after former Press Secretry Trixie Cruz-Angeles resigned from her post.
According to her, President Bongbong Marcos told her that he needs someone to help the Office of the Press Secretary while it has yet to have a chief.
“Naging usapan namin last week, pinatawag niya ako and he said na kailangan ng someone sa OPS na makatulong. Then he offered me the OIC position, so I said yes of course,” Garafil told reporters.

Garafil assumed as the officer-in-charge at a time when several names have been floated as the possible successors of Angeles. She doesn’t mind whether she served at the OPS as a full-fledged press secretary or as an officer-in-charge as long as she has the President’s trust and confidence.
The Palace official also said there will be “changes around the operations”, adding that they will be having a meeting formally on the operations of the Office of the Press Secretary.
To recall, Garafil resigned from her position as chairperson of the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) last October 7 after accepting the offer to help the Office of the Press Secretary as its OIC and Undersecretary.
Following the resignation of Angeles supposedly because of “health reasons”, the press secretary post has been vacant since October 5.
