The poll body announced that the continuing voter’s registration will resume on July 4, 2022.

According to COMELEC Acting Spokesperson John Rex Laudiangco, the en banc approved on Wednesday the resumption of continuing voter’s registration from July 4 to 23.

Laudiangco explained that the voter’s registration is less than a month since under Republic Act 8189 or the Continuing Voter’s Registration Act, voter registration is prohibited within 120 days prior to elections.

The Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan polls is on Dec. 5, 2022. Roughly starting August 7, it’s already prohibited,” Laudiangco said. “Therefore, we only have July 24 to Aug 6 to post/publish names of voter registration applicants; calendar/set the Election Registration Board (ERB) hearings; subject registrants to database verification; conduct said ERB hearings; draft and approve the Project of Precincts; and cluster established precincts as may be necessary.

Earlier, Laudiangco said that the projected total number of registered voters for Barangay Elections is 66,053,357, while the projected total number of registered voters for the Sangguniang Kabataan Elections is 23,059,227.

Laudiangco also said that those are mere projections based on historical data for purposes of planning and procurement for the Barangay and SK Elections (BSKE).

While the poll body is expecting the conduct of the next Barangay and SK polls in December, some lawmakers backed the postponement of the local elections — including House Majority Leader Martin Romualdez, who is poised to be the next Speaker.

According to Romualdez, the government could save PHP 8.141 billion if the Barangay and SK Elections will be deferred.

Meanwhile, Manila Bulletin reported that COMELEC has set the date of the Plebiscite to ratify the division of the Province of Maguindanao into 2 provinces, namely: Maguindanao del Sur and Maguindanao del Norte to September 17, 2022, in accordance with Republic Act No. 11550.
