Benjamin Diokno Named “Global Central Banker of the Year 2022”

BSP Governor Benjamin Diokno has been named as “Global Central Banker of the Year 2022”.

On Wednesday, the central bank said that Diokno has been named by an international banking magazine owned by the Financial Times as “Global Central Banker of the Year 2022”.

According to the central bank, The Banker recognized Diokno as the world’s best central banker for his efforts to help stimulate economic growth and recovery for the Philippines amidst the COVID-19 crisis.

Diokno said that he’s truly honored to be named The Banker’s Global Central Banker of the Year. According to him, The said award recognized the effort the central bank have put forth over the past year — amidst extraordinary challenges.

Also, the central bank said that Diokno’s recognition as the world’s best central banker by The Banker was the first for the country.

The Banker was an influential international monthly finance, banking, and business magazine owned by the Financial Times.

Aside from the award from The Banker, the BSP chief was also the “Asia-Pacific Central Banker of the Year 2022″.

While the entire world has been affected by the pandemic, Diokno said that the central bank has implemented policy responses in order to enable the Philippines to adapt to new ways of working, doing business, and living.

Looking ahead, alongside my colleagues at the BSP, I will continue to work toward a stronger, more technologically savvy, more inclusive, and more sustainable Philippine economy,” Diokno said.

The central bank has kept its benchmark rate at a record low of 2% since November 2020, and said that monetary policy will remain accommodative in order to support economic recovery.

Meanwhile, other central banks have raised rates as economic recovery accelerated and inflation started to rise.
