It is the Filipinos’ second time celebrating the holiday season amid the COVID-19 pandemic. There are still restrictions most especially in business operations as the threats of the virus is still present.
Currently, the restrictions in the Philippines are looser compared to the measures implemented last December 2020. Also, the daily COVID-19 cases now are lower compared to last year’s records. Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte believes that there is a possibility of another COVID-19 surge after the holidays. Based on a report on ABS-CBN News, the vice-presidential aspirant said that what cannot be determined is the intensity and how many will die from the supposed incoming surge.
Based on the report, Mayor Sara Duterte stressed that there are a lot of private gatherings that are happening as people see that the COVID-19 cases are low. Currently, Davao City has 56 active cases.
The Davao City Mayor recalled that the COVID-19 cases started rising in the first part of the year 2021 after the gatherings for the Christmas and New Year celebrations. Amid the around 1 million fully-vaccinated residents in the city, the Davao Mayor stressed that even fully-jabbed individuals may still contract the virus.
According to Mayor Duterte, the public can greatly help in reducing the COVID-19 spike by wearing face masks and not taking them off even inside the household.
Amid the threats of the Omicron variant which was reported to be a “heavily mutated” variant of the COVID-19, the Philippines held mass vaccinations. More than ten (10) million people were jabbed during the two (2) mass vaccination drives held.
